NSSAR Announces Fundraising Campaign to Digitize Historic Genealogical Records
LOUISVILLE, KY. (26 July 2026) – The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR) has announced a major fundraising effort to preserve and digitize the extensive collection of genealogical records maintained at its National Headquarters.
Supporting documents are submitted with every Application received by the Society. These documents provide the evidence used to establish applicants’ lineages to Patriots of the American Revolution. Over many decades, the collection has grown to an estimated more than three and a half million pages.
The Society’s archival storage vault has now reached capacity. Digitization will help preserve these historically significant materials while making the records easier to locate, retrieve, and provide to members and researchers, saving time a streamlining the process.
The President General has established a fundraising goal of $3 million to support records digitization and related information technology upgrades. Contributions may be made through the Records Digitization Fund, a designated subgroup of the NSSAR IT Special Purpose Fund. Donors should visit SAR.org, click the blue Donate button, and select IT Special Purpose Fund from the drop-down menu. Donors should designate their contribution for the Records Digitization Project.
The Records Digitization Project is part of the Society’s continuing effort to modernize its records-management systems, improve service to members, protect irreplaceable genealogical documentation, and preserve the legacy of America’s Revolutionary generation. Current projects include digitization of records, establishing an online payment system, National Dues Billing, paperless applications, website updates, moving SAR University to the main SAR.org website, and modernizing the Blue Database.
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution encourages its members, state societies, chapters, genealogists, historians, and supporters of historic preservation to contribute to this important undertaking.
