Historic Preservation Award

Nominations Due May 1st

Awarded to a State Society or Chapter that has significantly contributed to the historic preservation of the American Revolution, its patriots, and the heritage of our nation’s founding era. — submissions by a state society or chapter to the Vice Chair of the History Committee by May 1. The award will recognize contributions made during the calendar year ending on December 31 each year. A state society shall submit this form or chapter by May 1st to the HG Awards Sub-Committee Chair:  John Turley, Address: 639 Gordon Dr., Charleston, WV 35314, johnaturley@gmail.com (304) 344-8627. The award will recognize contributions made during the calendar year ending on December 31 each year.

Award: National Society Certificate with the Name of the State Society or Chapter and Year Awarded. Up to three awards will be presented in each region: East, Central, and West. This will be offered during the Annual Congress Awards Program.  The East Region comprises the New England, North Atlantic, Mid-Atlantic, and South Atlantic SAR districts. The Central Region includes the Central, Southern, Great Lakes, North Central, and South Central SAR districts. The West Region consists of the Rocky Mountain, Intermountain, Pacific, Western, European, and International SAR districts.

Judging Panel: A panel of at least three and no more than five members of the History Committee as appointed by the Historian General at the Spring Trustees Meeting.

Judging Criteria:

  1. Which state society or chapter made the most significant impact through leading, volunteering, or funding historic preservation projects from any of the following categories:

    1. Installation of interpretative and commemorative markers, plaques, public monuments, and memorials at historic sites, buildings, battlefields, cemeteries, courthouses, or in counties, cities, or places that are named for patriots and other founding fathers

    2. Nominations for each award should include: Name of Society or Chapter Nominee, Point of Contact including email and Phone Number., Any supporting documentation including photographs, newspaper articles, etc.

    3. Preservation and restoration of graves or cemeteries of Patriots or Patriot Sons and Daughters

    4. Rehabilitation, restoration, reconstruction, archaeological investigation, or preservation of historic properties, battlefields, sites, landscapes or objects

    5. Conservation, restoration, or preservation of historical books, documents, artifacts, and records or the digitization of these historical assets

    6. Produce and present public history programs outside of a school, exhibits in public spaces, or digital education media related to the history of the American Revolution.

  2. Which state society or chapter most effectively promoted preservation projects to the public through dedication ceremonies with public participation or through news articles, social media, or TV/radio?

  3. Which state society or chapter partnered with other heritage, lineage, or preservation groups in advancing these preservation projects?

The Minnesota Society, Stephen Taylor Award

Nominations Due May 1st

The Minnesota Society Stephen Taylor Award is presented to the compatriot who has contributed significantly to preserving the history of the American Revolutionary era and its patriots through his research and writing.

  • Nominations may be submitted at the state or chapter level by May 1st of each year.

  • All nominations should include: Name of Society or Chapter Nominee, Point of Contact including email and Phone Number, and a list of the activities of the Nominee: Include date, location, audience, estimated attendance, and actions of the nominee and their significance in “his research and writing, has contributed significantly to preserving the history of the American Revolutionary era and its patriots.”

  • Nominations are to be sent to the Sub-Committee HG Awards Chair:  John Turley, Address: 639 Gordon Dr., Charleston, WV 35314, johnaturley@gmail.com (304) 344-8627

  • A judging panel will consist of at least three and no more than five members of the History Committee as appointed by the Historian General at the Spring Trustees Meeting. The Vice Chair of the History Committee will consolidate the competition results and submit them to the Chair of the History Committee. The Chair will approve the judging and forward the Committee’s recommendation to the Historian General for final approval and forwarding to the National Society Executive Director no later than 1 June.

  • National Society Certificate Titled: The Minnesota Society, Stephen Taylor Award; with the Name and Society of the Winner and the Year Awarded. To be presented at the Annual Congress Awards Presentation.

  • The judging criteria are:

  • Which nominee “through his writing and research” made the greatest impact on “the preservation of the history of the American Revolution era and its patriots”?

  • Which nominee made the best use of new or known source documents?

  • Which nominee reached the largest audience?

Colonel Stewart Boone McCarty Award

The Colonel Stewart Boone McCarty Award is presented to the compatriot who furthered the preservation of U.S. history and its traditional teaching in our schools.

  1. Nominations may be submitted at the state or chapter level by May 1st of each year.

  2. Name of Society or Chapter Nominee, Point of Contact including email and Phone Number. Include date, location, audience, estimated attendance, and actions of the nominee and their significance in “furthering the preservation of U.S. history and its traditional teaching in our schools”?

  3. Nominations are to be sent to the HG Sub-Committee Awards Chair: John Turley, Address: 639 Gordon Dr., Charleston, WV 35314, johnaturley@gmail.com (304) 344-8627

  4. A judging panel will consist of at least three and no more than five members of the History Committee as appointed by the Historian General at the Spring Trustees Meeting.
