Diabetes and B-12 by Dar. Darryl Addington, Surgeon General

Author: Mick Pitzer

Diabetes adult onset or Type II affects about 10% of the population. This is about 10 million. Metformin is one of the medications most prescribed by physicians. Vitamin B-12 deficiency or low normal levels have been found in approximately 40% of people taking Metformin. Low B-12 can result in anemia, depression, dementia and peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral Neuropathy results in pain, numbness in hands or feet in about 77% of people with neuropathy. B-12 is found in meat and dairy products or can be taken as a supplement or injection.

If you are taking Metformin, discuss the issue with your physician if you should be screened for B-12 deficiency.
