Yorktown Days
October 19, 2007
While the rest of Virginia and most of the East Coast was struggling with its 33rd day of no
measurable rain, it rained in Yorktown. Not a lot, but enough to bring out the umbrellas
and leave drops on camera lens. But, as luck would have it, by the time the
annual parade stepped off at 10:30 the sky cleared and a few white clouds
could be seen through the overcast.

VASSAR President Joe Dooley braved the drizzle without hat and spoke to those in attendance about the
life of Governor Thomas Nelson, Jr., the man we honor each year prior to the parade.

Virginia's own, President General Bruce Wilcox, presented a wreath on behalf of the National Society
while Vice President General Hall Worthington (R) presented a wreath on behalf of the Mid-Atlantic District.

The Yorktown Fife and Drum Corps entertained those in attendance. Compatriot Bob Schmidt (R),
Chairman of the Yorktown Celebrations Committee, welcomed those who braved the rain
and introduced those presenting wreaths.

The Virginia Society and members of the SAR from other state societies, led by VASSAR President Joe Dooley,
marched the one-mile route up Main Street, past the original house of Governor Thomas Nelson, Jr.
In addition to Virginia, states presented in the SAR Color Guard included California, Delaware,
District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
