Eagle Scout Recognition Program
Eagle Scout Scholarship Competition
![]()
The Virginia Society Eagle Scout Recognition Program is available to award or provide Certificates of Recognition to all Virginia Eagle Scouts, either annually or upon specific request, and usually in advance of an Eagle Scout Court of Honor. Requests for certificates should be directed to the State Chairman at least thirty (30) days prior to the date of the Court of Honor ceremony.
Certificates are typically sent from a scout’s local SAR Chapter; however, in some cases, they may be sent directly from the Virginia Society of the SAR.
The Virginia Society Eagle Scout Scholarship Competition offers applicants opportunities to win awards at three levels: Chapter, State and National.
A scout who is registered in an active unit and earns the rank of Eagle is eligible to compete in the program, provided he has not reached his 19th birthday during the year of application, whether he is enrolled in high school or college. There is no limit to the number of times a Boy Scout, Varsity Scout or Venturer may apply. Prospective applicants should prepare for the Scholarship by earning the three recommended merit badges (American Heritage, Genealogy & Law) and researching their ancestries while still Star or Life scouts.
To participate in the Eagle Scout Scholarship Program in Virginia, Eagles must be sponsored by one of Virginia’s SAR Chapters, unless sponsored by the Virginia Society, in the event no regional chapter representation exists. Winners of chapter competitions will have the opportunity to compete for one of the three Virginia Society SAR Cash Scholarship Awards, ranging from $200 to $1000. The application of the First Place Winner of the Virginia Competition will be forwarded to NSSAR for entry in the National Scholarship Competition.
For an opportunity to win as much as $1000 in cash scholarships at the State level and as much as $8,000 as the First Place Winner at National level (made through the Arthur M. and Berdena King Eagle Scout Scholarship Fund), simply fill out one Application and an Ancestor Chart, which is used for all three levels of competition. The application requires a short essay, which should relate in some way to the Revolutionary War. A list of suggested topics is available for download. (A free Adobe Reader is available to view these files on your computer.)
The deadline for receipt of the application, including ancestor chart and 500-word essay, by the chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution in your area of residence is December 15th in order that your application may be reviewed and/or reformatted in time for the absolute deadline of December 31st. The application year is the calendar year. Some chapters permit submission via email. (Scouts in states other than Virginia should visit the National Society, SAR Eagle Scout Webpage.)
