Black Patriots Monument Dedication

Old Elam Cemetery- Ruthville, VA

More than 200 folks gathered in the small Old Elam Cemetery in Charles City County for the unveiling and dedication. 

Special guests included President General Bruce Wilcox, DAR Vice President General Patricia Mayer,

SAR Vice President Generals Hall Worthington and John Wallace, among others.

The VASSAR Color Guard performed flawlessly as usual.

The monument specifically recognized 26 men of color from the Charles City County area who are known to have

taken part in the Revolutionary War, either as soldiers or contributors of goods.  They were among the

5,000-20,000 men of color who took part in the war throughout the colonies.

President General Bruce Wilcox welcomed the folks in attendance and spoke about the contributions

men of color made during the Revolutionary War.

(member of the DAR in Pennsylvania), Rev. Horace B. Parham, Jr., pastor of the Elam Baptist Church, and
