Cornwallis Surrenders to George Washington at Yorktown. Welcome to the web site of the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution! The Compatriots of the VASSAR invite you to join our ranks as we strive to keep patriotism and the memory of our Revolutionary War heritage burning in the hearts and minds of every American, young and old. Virginia is sewn into the very fabric of American history. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Patrick Henry, and countless other patriots first drew breath on Virginia soil. In many respects, American Independence began with Virginia. It was Richard Henry Lee, a delegate from Virginia, who first proposed on June 7, 1776, that the Continental Congress declare independence from Great Britain.
Twenty months earlier, on October 10, 1774, patriots from Virginia under the command of Col. Andrew Lewis met a Shawnee and Mingo Indian force led by Chief Cornstalk at the confluence of the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers, a place called Point Pleasant, then Virginia, now West Virginia. In 1908, the United States Senate declared that the Battle at Point Pleasant was the first battle of the Revolutionary War. And, of course, the war to throw off the cloak of British colonialism ended with the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. Today, the spirit of those brave individuals lives on in the hearts of the more than 1,600 members of the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution.
