We the UTAH SOCIETY, SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION are a
unit of the National Society-NSSAR. The Sons of the American Revolution
was first chartered in the State of Connecticut in 1880. In1906
by Act of Congress and through the assistance of one of our greatest
member's, Col. Theodore Roosevelt, who at the time was President
of the United States. TheUTSSAR has been a organized society of
the NSSAR since 27 January 1895. We're pleased that you have an
interest in joining the Utah Society of the Sons of the American
Revolution. On behalf of the Utah Society, Sons of the American
Revolution, I would like to extend an invitation to you to submit
an application to join theSociety. The Sons of the American Revolution
is an organization of men eighteen years of age or older who are
descended from a man or woman who supported the American Revolution.
The objectives of the Sons of the American Revolution are PATRIOTIC,
EDUCATIONAL and HISTORICAL. In an effort to reach as many prospective
members as possible, I ask if you have any brothers or sons eighteen
years or older, if so we cordially extend this invitation to them
also. If you have any sisters or daughters, we can assist them
with membership in the DAR. The DAR is our sister organization
and we treasure all their efforts in teaching and leading the
woman in this great cause of Patriotism. There is also an organization
for individuals under the age of eighteen, both boys and girls,
to learn more about this great country. This organization is the
CAR. The CAR is overseen by both the SAR and DAR. All three of
these organizations support no political or religious affiliation.
Members have locally and nationally have been a cross-section
of leaders of the general leadership of the Catholic, Episcopal,
and LDS Churches, as well as Civic, State, and Federal Officials
for Utah. Many prominent Utahns who are or have been members of
the Utah SAR include the late Gov. Scott Matheson and the late
Gov.Herbert Maw, Senators Orrin Hatch, Robert Bennett, Former
Congressmen Howard Nielsen, David Monson, Dan Marriott, church
leaders, LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley and Episcopal
Bishop George E.Bates (Ret) as well as many other civic leaders.
We have enjoyed the rich contributions all members have given
to the Utah Society. Whether the members be everyday people or
leaders of the community, we are all compatriots. There are presently
two local chapters in Utah: Salt Lake and Ogden. We hope to establish
chapters in Provo, Logan, Price, Vernal and St.George/Cedar City.
Each chapter holds meetings from October to April. The State Society
conducts three special meetings each year: Constitution Day (September),
Washington's Birthday (February), and the Annual Meeting (May).
The State Society awards medals to superior ROTC cadets, superior
Eagle Scout, outstanding highschool seniors, civic leaders and
law enforcement personnel. The SAR encourages and fosters patriotism,
education and family history. We hope all would foster these goals.
The Official Pledge of the SAR is: We
descendants of the heroes of the American Revolution who, by their
sacrifices, established the United States of America, reaffirm
our faith in the principles of liberty and of the Constitutional
Republic, and solemnly pledge ourselves to defend them against
every foe. New members receive
an attractive membership certificate and are permitted to obtain
and wear the insignia of the society. The National Society publishes
a quarterly magazine which is always interesting and informative,
and the Utah Society publishes a quarterly newsletter. As you're
probably aware, membership in the SAR requires descent in any
line from an individual who participated in the War for American
Independence. Therefore, you'll need to document and to prove
your direct descent from an individual who participated in the
War for American Independence. This proof can take many forms;
a previously approved SAR or DAR membership application for another
member of your family, birth and death certificates, etc. The
enclosed pamphlet explains the membership requirements in detail
and provides guidelines for completing the application papers.
Accordingly, please contact us for a worksheet application with
instructions for it's completion. I believe that you'll find the
instructions to be self explanatory, but please feel free to call
us at any time if you have any questions or need any points clarified.
When you've completed the worksheet application, please return
it to us with copies of your supporting documentation so we can
review it and type the final application. After the final has
been typed, we'll return it to you for your signature. Then, it
will be processed through the state and national organizations
for approval. Entrance fees are $60.00, with annual dues of $35
due on January 1st. For new applicants, annual dues for the current
year must accompany the entrance fee, for a total due upon application
of $95. We have a family program where father, sons, uncles can
all join at the same time. the cost would be $95.00 for the first
application and $65.00 for any family member to join at the same
time. Please accept our invitation. If we can be of any assistance,
please feel free to contact James Downing the State Society Secretary
