The Utah Society, SAR is looking to form both chapter and state color\honor guard volunteer units that would be dressed in replicas of Revolutionary War uniforms and carry arms and flags characteristic of that period. A few could be fifers and/or drummers. In Utah we would like to form with the Delaware Society as a core to center around. More and more we read about fellow SAR and other Military Veterans who are not given due regard or respect at their funerals due to Federal Budget cuts. Is it not therefore our duty and sacred honor that we ourselves show the last measure of devotion to these comrades in arms?? Here in Utah for many years the average age for the Compatriots stood at 66 years. Who will honor them??? I suggest that we as the SAR link up with any patriotic organization that is willing to assist the Veterans Administration and American Legion in doing our duty.
In Utah we could align with the Utah Civil War Association, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Mormon Battalion, Boy Scouts of America and ROTC units that are willing Who is willing to accept the challenge and call. Who among you are descendants of Revolutionary War Veterans?? Join with the Utah Society or if not a descendant join the Delaware Society where any and all who desire to be a actor in Revolutionary War costume.
Color guards lend an air of excitement and purpose to SAR activities. They also attract considerable attention at parades, re-enactments, and other public events. Members of color guards are often asked to come to primary and secondary schools (in uniform) to talk about the Struggle for Independence and their region's or ancestors' roles in the founding of our nation. As a colorful and patriotic unit you may receive requests for appearance at holiday parades, civic events, and field ceremonies at athletic events. You can vote in your uniform -- and a call the week before to alert the local paper may result in an interesting press account that promotes voting in future elections. One unit has helped congratulate new citizens at the ceremony granting them citizenship. They worked with their local DAR chapter, which has a decades-old custom of honoring such new citizens on the occasion of their committing themselves to our constitutional form of government .
Awards:
Flags: We would need to get the same size flags (3 feet by 5 feet, with a pole hem and no fringe) as those of the National Society Color Guard. Note: A pole hem is a sleeve (at the edge of the flag) into which the flagpole is placed to secure the flag to the pole. The sleeve, used before the practice of placing screws through grommets in the flag hem became popular is the style of choice. Flag, ornament, pole, and base, are available here in Utah at Modern Display in Salt lake City or contact SAR Merchandising.SAR flag page
Ornaments: Should be an eagle ornament top for the national flag and spear tops for all others.
Poles: The popular option is oak poles, 8' long by 1.25" diameter, with a brass screw joint at 4'. The rate of tarnishing can be reduced by varnishing the brass and wearing gloves while handling and carrying the poles.
Bases: Ten pound bases are adequate to hold the poles upright in a light breeze and are easier to carry than heavier bases.
Gloves are available at military base stores. Flag slings may be purchased through the Boy Scouts of America

You should write for a catalog before ordering any item to make sure that you have a printed description and can later check that what you got is what you wanted and what you ordered. The author of this Web page and the National Society Sons of the American Revolution can make no guarantee as to the quality or authenticity of any product from the firms listed here.
NOTE: Polyester uniforms are very popular and are less expensive than uniforms made of linen or wool. However, they are very hot in warm weather, and you cannot safely fire muskets when wearing a polyester uniform. The danger of flash fire to the wearer is great enough that the National Park Service personnel who will conduct a safety inspection prior to any firing in a National Park will not allow anyone wearing a polyester uniform to shoot using a firelock weapon. This peril does not exist if your color guard does not fire muskets.
