The Pennsylvania State Society and many
of the 23 local SAR Chapters in Pennsylvania participate in
the Knight Essay Contest.
The Knight Essay Contest is open to
all students attending public, parochial, or private high
schools (including accredited home schools) who are in their
junior or senior year of study during the contest year.
The contest requires an original essay written in English,
with a minimum of 750 words and a maximum of 1000 words (excluding
title page and bibliography). The topic of the essay
must be an event, person, philosophy, or ideal associated
with the American Revolution, the Declaration of
Independence, or the framing of the United States
Constitution.

An annual statewide Eagle Scout Contest also is conducted.

Americanism Elementary School
Poster Contest
The Pennsylvania State Society and many
of the 23 local SAR Chapters in Pennsylvania participate in
the Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest. The contest is for
4th or 5th grade students, depending on which grade teaches the American
Revolution. A different topic is selected each Spring for the following
school year. A winner from each school competes at the Chapter level and
the Chapter winner competes at the state level. The State Society will
select a winner to compete at the National level. PASSAR awards the
state winner a $50 savings bond and chapters may award their own prize to
their respective winners. In 2005, the 2nd place winner for the
National award was from Pennsylvania and in 2006 the 1st place winner was from
Pennsylvania.

The Joseph S. Rumbaugh
Historical Oration Contest
This contest is open to all students attending
home schools, public, parochial, or private high schools who are in their
sophomore, junior or senior year during the contest year. The oration
must be original of not less than five minutes or more than six minutes.
The subject shall deal with an event, personality or document pertaining the
the Revolutionary War and show a relationship to America today. The
preliminary rounds are held by Chapters and/or State Societies to select one
winner from each participating state, which will compete at the NSSAR's
National Congress in June/July to determine a National winner.
