WHO and
What is the Philadelphia Continental Chapter of the Sons of the American
Revolution?
The
primary requirement for membership is authentic documentation proving direct
lineage to a patriot who supported the Revolutionary Cause.
Yes, as a direct descendant of the patriots who worked and fought to
create our Nation, we seek to preserve the principles they established as the
very foundation of this great Republic.
We are
opposed to revision of our history and so employ a number of programs to
encourage a return to accuracy and truthfulness:
Locating, registering and marking the
graves of our Revolutionary Patriots. We
placed over 1400 Betsy Ross flags on the graves of these Patriots in over
one hundred and fifty locations throughout
Participating in events honoring specific historical activities and personalities that led to the successful conclusion of the American Revolution, such as General George Washington's Birthday and the signing of our Constitution.
Preservation of historical places such
as
We have an intense interest in what is happening now and in the future, such as the new American Revolution Center.
We honor national, state and community
leaders for their actions to preserve and enforce our Constitution and Bill
of Rights with Good Citizenship and Law Enforcement Awards.
We recognize outstanding history teachers in our local schools.
Our Color Guard, in the uniform of Washington's Life Guard with their colorful Revolutionary period flags, participate in U.S. Naturalization Ceremonies, Memorial Day parades Flag Day events, etc.
We donate
paperback books to the USO in Terminal A of Philadelphia's
We present silver and bronze ROTC medals in 25 local high schools and colleges and participate in the NSSAR JROTC with a top award of $1,000.00. There also is the George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest with a $2,000.00 top award.
Every
new Eagle Scout (525 in 2008) in
Amongst our special funds there is the Ruth and F. Russell Greenspan Fund used for scholarships in the area of historical preservation.
We are one of the largest of 450 chapters in the National Society with approximately 350 members. We have interesting luncheons and dinners throughout the year and an annual picnic every June.
We always welcome new members and can use their talents to enhance our activities.
