Eligibility

Any man shall be eligible for membership in this Society who meets the following requirements:

  • is a citizen of good repute in the community;
  • is the lineal descendant of an ancestor who was at all times unfailing in loyalty to, and rendered service in, the cause of American independence, either as an officer, soldier, seaman, miltiaman or minuteman, in the armed forces of the Continental Congress, of any one of the several Colonies or State, or a signer of the Declaration of Independence, or as a or member of a Committee of Safety or Correspondence, or as a member of any Continental Provincial or Colonial Congress or Legislature or signer of Oath of Fidelity or as recognized patriot who performed actual service by overt acts of resistance to the authority of Great Britain;
  • does not advocate the overthrow of the Government of the United States by use of force or violence;
  • is personally acceptable to the Society.
Collect and Organize your Documentation

When you have identified an ancestor who provided eligible service, you will need proper documentation to prove your lineage.  This documentation will include certified birth, marriage, and death certificates, wills, federal census and other records.  Printed genealogies may be accepted as proof only if the genealogy is adequately documented; however, it is best to rely on primary documents, i.e., a birth certificate that clearly establishes parents' names or a will in which the writer clearly identifies a child through whom the applicant's lineage is traced.  You will also need adequate documentation that your ancestor provided eligible service.

The following documents are provided by the National Society to prospective members. You may right-click on them and select "Save Target As" to save them to your local hard drive for use offline.

SAR application worksheet This form may be printed as a blank form or edited before printing.  (This is a Rich Text Format (RTF) text document.)
List of Professional Genealogists This list is provided as a reference for those applicants who require assistance in genealogical research.  The cost of this service is not part of the SAR application process and is at the discretion of the applicant.
SAR Application This application form is approved by the National Society; however, it must be printed on archival paper to be accepted.  Please contact the state membership chairman for details.

If you know that your ancestor is already documented in an application for membership to either the SAR or the DAR, you may request a record copy of that application.  The fee for the SAR service is $5.00 and can be ordered using the form below. For services through the DAR, check the DAR website.

SAR Record Copy Request Form A "record copy" is a copy of an approved application which has annotations made during the approval process to add and delete or made by independent review.
