Sites that Have Data Online

Ancestry.com has constructed a major collection of genealogical data -- compiled, transcribed, or as photo-images -- and the collection is growing daily.   While some of it is available to all who visit the site, much of the better material (for example, the DAR Lineage Books) is available only to members.

The National Archives has an excellent Genealogy Site and on-line catalogs of the Military Service Records - for all wars, with instructions on ordering the records on microfilm.

The RootsWeb WorldConnect Project is a wonderful genealogical resource, containing over eleven million names in linked family groupings.  Anyone can upload their own GEDCOM file, which is then converted by RootsWeb software into an HTML genealogy report, complete with pedigree and descendancy chart displays.   Contributors to the WorldConnect Project continue to own and completely control their own GEDCOM files.  You may search the names already uploaded, upload your own GEDCOM, or find detailed answers to questions about WorldConnect at:

Note:  RootsWeb is a nonprofit organization, their services are entirely free, and they do not sell or commercially exploit any information that is contributed to them.   Of course, since anyone in the world can use what is posted there, you should not upload files that contain information about a person who is still living.

GEDCOM is the acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunication, created by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also called the Mormons).  GEDCOM files are text files in a special format that facilitates the exchange of genealogical data among different software programs.   Most, but not all, genealogical software programs can accept data from and export data as GEDCOM files.  For more information, see
