When the American Revolution moved South in 1778 with the capture of Savannah, there lived in Wilkes County a freed slave named Austin, who enlisted in the Patriot militia as a substitute for his master, took on the name Dabney, and served as a good soldier in many battles and skirmishes with the British and the Tories, and helped his country secure victory over Great Britain in the American Revolution.
