Policy Approved by the 2004 Annual Congress

The Genealogy Committee shall establish policies and procedures regarding the conditions under which new member and supplemental applications are accepted, to ensure that there is reasonable evidence which eligible applicants or members must provide; recommends methods of search for an applicant to follow where proof is missing on any essential fact; reviews all pending new member applications over six months old or any pending applications not accepted by the Genealogist General that has been appealed to the President General, and recommends a course of action for each application reviewed; and conducts a workshop on genealogical sources and procedures at the Annual Congress.

The NSSAR will accept record copies of applications (dated 1986 or later) from the
  • NSDAR
  • General Society of Mayflower Descendants
  • Society of the Cincinnati
  • Founders and Patriots of America
  • The Society of Colonial Wars
with respect to related sections of the SAR application that require proof of service and/or proof of the applicant's lineage.

The NSSAR will accept certain vital record data that is available on the Internet or sold on a CD-Rom, that have been compiled from reputable sources and would otherwise be acceptable to the NSSAR as documentation. In all cases of Internet documentation, a hard copy that identifies the URL and/or source of the document shall accompany the submission so its authenticity can be verified if necessary.
