"How To" Create and Train Your Color Guard Unit
Financing
Your
Color
Guard
Without a doubt, financing your Color Guard is the single most difficult obstacle
to over come. We believe anything worthwhile can be financed entirely
by private contributions. Regardless of how the funds are raised, it
should be noted that starting a Color Guard is an expensive proposition
The uniforms are only a small portion of the expense. The equipment can
easily cost more than the actual uniforms.
There are two grades of uniforms. The first is referred to as being museum
quality, easily costing hundreds of dollars. The second grade is un-named,
but generally lacks the authenticity of the former. If your Color Guard
is also going to perform in living history programs, museum quality is a must.
If it serves strictly as a Color Guard then the less expensive uniforms will do
very nicely. Equipment is an entirely different situation.
Well made hats are a must. Belts should be made of white leather and
side arms, swords, muskets bayonets must be as authentic looking as possible.
Replicas being preferred rather than valuable antiques.
The purpose of a Color Guard is to carry and display flags. It is mandatory
that the National flag be flown but in keeping with the historic nature of our Color
Guards, the Betsy Ross flag, which is still an official US flag, can be carried along
with the applicable State and the S.A.R. flags. Therefore, Color Guards
should have no less than 3 flags bearers and 2 guards.
