1000th Library Patron Begins Research!

The SAR Genealogical Research Library hit a milestone on July 22, 2011. Sgt. Maj. Ronald Burkhart, USMC Ret. became the 1000th patron to visit the library. Compatriot Burkhart of the Indiana Society SAR and his wife Ngoc T. “Kathy” Burkhart made the trip to the library from their home in Bloomington, IN to do research for his application for the Jamestowne Society on his ancestor Francis Mason.

1000th Visitor to the SAR LibraryCompatriot Burkhart has been a member of the SAR since 2008 and has been doing genealogy research for 27 years. He is a former president of the Daniel Guthrie Chapter INSSAR and is also a member of the Kentucky Society of the Sons and Daughters of Pilgrims. Burkhart’s SAR patriot is Maj. John Meason of the Westmoreland County Pennsylvania militia, a descendent of Francis Mason. As an SAR member, Burkhart enjoys putting together Revolutionary War displays and visiting Revolutionary War battle sites such as Kings Mountain and Cowpens.

Burkhart retired from the Marine Corps after 28 years of service in 1988. During his time in the military, he served on Department of State Duty at embassies in Sudan and Kenya as well as leading the marine guards at the U.S. Embassy in Indonesia. He is a recipient of the Purple Heart with gold star and Meritorious Service Medal. Currently, he lectures part-time at the Indiana University Kelly School of Business. In addition to his wife Kathy, he has four children and seven grandchildren.

Compatriot Burkhart received a gift bag of SAR merchandise for being the lucky patron. We would like to thank Mr. Burkhart and the other 999 visitors that have helped make the new library a success!
